[ARCHIVED] Lake George Water Quality Improvements

Graphic with photos and text about Lake George Water Quality Improvements

Lake George is a centerpiece and gathering place for many community events in St. Cloud.

In recent years, the lake has experienced algae blooms that have rendered the lake green in color with unpleasant odors. Because of this issue, Lake George was placed on Minnesota's Impaired Waters list for low water clarity (ability to see through the water) and elevated phosphorus and algae.

St. Cloud has been working hard to correct the water quality issues in Lake George. In the time since Lake George was listed as an impaired water, the City has

  • Completed The Lake George Sub-Watershed Assessment Plan and Water Quality Improvement Implementation Plan
  • Started consistent water quality monitoring
  • Completed 4 alum treatments to control algae in the lake and improve water quality
  • Dredged sediment from "Little George" - the stormwater treatment pond that helps keep Lake George clean
