Equipment Maintenance DivisionThe Equipment Maintenance Division repairs and maintains equipment for the Street, Engineering, Electrical Services, Sanitation, Parking, Traffic Marking, and Airport Divisions of the City. This Division has three full-time mechanics working in eight service bays. Two bays are set up specifically for lube and oil changes and one bay is dedicated to welding. The Department operates over 40 large trucks, 40 pickup trucks and vans, 60 pieces of construction equipment (e.g. – front-end loaders, graders, sweeper, etc.) and numerous accessory equipment items such as snow plows and wings, sanders and brine tanks. The repair and maintenance of these vehicles and equipment accounts for the majority of the work performed by the Equipment Maintenance Division. Repairs range from simple procedures like bulb replacement to complex operations such as the removal and rebuilding of transmissions. This Division also services three Parking Control vehicles used by the Police Department. A considerable amount of welding and fabricating is generated by the snow removal equipment. Much of the welding is repair work on snow plows and wings due to damage caused by the constant vibration and impact of manholes and curbs. Fabrication can vary from making curb runners for snow plows to building parts that are obsolete and no longer available from the manufacturer. With this wide variety of equipment from over 50 different manufacturers, our mechanics are required to possess a broad knowledge base and to undergo frequent training. Some of the areas of expertise include major engine repair, engine and transmission electronics, general electrical repair, transmissions including automatic, manual, hydrostatic, and various combinations of manual and automatic. Hydraulic systems are a very interracial component of much of our equipment. These systems can range from very basic systems all the way up to a very complex electric over-hydraulic system with ground speed control found on some of our plow trucks. Training has become a very key component of this division because of the myriad of changes and improvements that the automotive, heavy truck and construction equipment industries make each year. The Equipment Maintenance Division also stocks a modest supply of commonly used replacement parts such as filters, hoses and fittings, replacement bulbs, cutting edges, and many other miscellaneous parts. |
